Frequently Asked Questions

What are your candles made of?

Our candles are made from 100% natural soy wax and the finest Australian fragrances, ensuring a cleaner, healthier burn. We also use FSC-certified wood wicks, made from sappy fruit trees, which produce a natural crackling sound when burning. We carefully selected the best scents to create a beautiful, long-lasting fragrance. Plus, all our ingredients are sustainably sourced!

How are Yarra Light Candles made?

We hand-pour our candles in small batches to ensure the highest quality and minimize our environmental impact. All our candles are packed, labelled and dispatched from our small home studio.

Do you use sustainable packaging?

Yes, we’re committed to sustainability! We use eco-friendly, recyclable, and biodegradable packaging to ensure that your candle arrives safely without harming the planet. Also, our packaging is proudly made in Australia to support local businesses and reduce our carbon footprint.

How do I make my candle last longer?

Light your candle for at least 2 hours the first time to create an even melt pool. This helps prevent tunnelling and ensures your candle lasts longer.

Try not to burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time.

Trim the wick to 3-5mm each time (yes, each time :) you use your candle to keep the flame at the right size (use your wick trimmer or just pinch it with your fingers, it doesn’t matter).

Why is my candle tunnelling, and how can I fix it?

No worries. This typically happens if the candle wasn’t burned long enough the first time. To fix it, make sure to let your candle burn for at least 2 hours on its first use, or until the wax melts evenly across the entire surface. This helps prevent tunnelling and ensures a nice, even burn next time!

Why is trimming the wick important?

Trimming the wick is essential for a clean, safe, and efficient burn. A shorter wick (around 3-5mm) helps control the flame size, preventing it from getting too big or flickering. This not only extends the life of your candle but also reduces soot buildup and ensures your candle burns evenly. So, keep your wick trimmed for the best experience!

Why does my candle have a bumpy top after burning?

That’s an easy question! It means your candle is made from 100 % natural soy wax. Bumps can happen when the candle cools too quickly after burning, which is common with natural waxes like soy. Don’t worry – this is totally normal and doesn’t affect how the candle burns.

Why does my candle have white crystals?

The white crystals you see are called frosting, and they’re completely normal with natural soy wax. They happen when the wax cools and solidifies, and it's just a sign that your candle is made with high-quality, natural ingredients. It doesn’t affect the burn or performance, so no need to worry!

Why does my candle have wet spots?

Wet spots can appear when the wax pulls away slightly from the container as it cools, and this can happen due to temperature changes, especially during shipping. This means that we can not control this process as it comes down to pure science.
This is a natural part of the cooling process, especially with soy wax. It doesn’t affect the burn or performance of your candle, so there’s no need to worry. It’s just a sign that your candle is made with high-quality, natural wax!

Why is my candle flaming out, and how can I fix it?

Wooden wicks can go out if they’re too short or have excess burnt wood. Before relighting, trim the wick to around 3-5mm and remove any charred bits to keep the flame strong. If the wick is drowning in wax, let it burn long enough (at least 1-2 hours) to create a full melt pool. If needed, gently tilt the jar and drain excess wax to give the wick more room to breathe.
